There are many situations in which the creation of a garden is made difficult by strong winds. These in themselves, it can be difficult to establish plants more susceptible, but if the winds carry salt from sea water or are particularly cold, the challenge is even greater. Planting a Windbreaks can reduce considerably sustained winds at both our plants and ourselves.
The first thing to remember to establish a barrier against wind is that it is preferable to filter the wind rather than creating a solid barrier. A wall or a building that at first seems the best way to protect an area, but high barriers to create eddies and turbulence around of them may be worse for the plants and you. We all familiar with the force of winds between the buildings of the city. In the same way as the walls create immediate barriers to close also produce swirls and eddies of a strong wind around them. Plants tend to filter the wind rather than deflect so that the wind force is reduced instead of just moved elsewhere. They are also less expensive and generally more attractive than the walls, usually improve with time and may require less maintenance.
In planting a windbreak should start with a good idea of the prevailing wind in your neighborhood. For most locations, there is a direction in which most of the winds arrive. For example, most of the United Kingdom is subject to the prevailing south-west, but damaging cold winds that can come other directions. For a garden situated on a cliff or headland that can be frequent winds of more than one direction. What you need to know you about them in advance to plant trees that will be in the right place. It may take years to establish windbreaks so it is certainly worth this right the first time.
The general principle of planting a windbreak is to establish a row of tall trees with dense small trees and shrubs on both sides of the same on the sides to the wind and downwind. These small trees and shrubs increase significantly the overall effect filtering. In general, the effectiveness of a windbreak extends generally established on the leeward side of the break a distance that is about 5-10 times the height of trees, but may affect about 25 times the height. So, if the trees are 30 feet high protection against can be effective for more than 200 to 300 feet
To choose plants that work in a difficult situation, the first thing to do is look trees and shrubs already growing in your neighborhood. You can see there are Sycamore and is one of the few situations where it can be planting of these trees resistant easily justified in the United Kingdom. It is generally considered a "weed tree", because they are very invasive and support little wildlife compared species. They Aboriginal however windbreaks on farms and traditional institutions and exposed hill can provide the same function for a garden. They, of course, they lose their leaves in winter and thus a kind of evergreen large to be added to the hedge. Austria pine, Pinus nigra, are excellent in this situation because they are resistant to strong winds and salt and do not need good soil. For a subset of small trees shrubs and again good to see what develops and in your neighborhood. Near the sea possible candidates are persistent Griselinia, Arbutus, Holly, Hebes, Eucalyptus gunnii, Olearia, Berberis darwinii, Phormium and Cordyline. Many of these do not grow in cold and exposed. evergreen shrubs for cold regions can be Eleagnus, Euonymus, Mahonia, Myrica, Rhododendron and Viburnum. deciduous trees in both situations and may include whitebeams rowan, birch, ash, beech, alder, willow y. Shrubs may include fuchsia riccartonii, Rosa rugosa and Gorse.
Planting trees and fixing the current conditions described above is also a problem. Our natural instinct is senior management involvement and attach three to four meters above ground level. However, there is a problem with that. We believe in the trunks of trees in some areas as being, like the muscles of the body of an animal. The more flexible and are challenged to become stronger. Therefore, if the participation of a large tree, then after several years, often triggered by participation notice that there accumulated enough strength to be alone. Our goal must be the game down so you can still flexible, but the roots can move and loosen the roots. Suffice it to say here is that the tree must be involved low angle with the trunk of the tree, with two low stakes connected by a crossbar or should be protected by ground anchors. Whatever system using the game should not go through the links mound above the ground should be loosened a little each year and the tree roots should not be allowed to dry for a year or two at least. Anchoring Soil is a specialized form to provide a lump in a tree's length non-harmful basement. If done correctly the root ball does not move and nothing but the tree is visible above the ground. It is an ideal way to plant a tree, but requires skill and no more and the cost of forms using cuttings classics.
Good protection against the wind to take several years to implement, but the interior of an amazing variety of sensitive and delicate plants can often survive and, moreover, that human beings generally feel more comfortable as well.
