The Hologram's Handbook is written by the actor Robert Picardo of the television series Star Trek Voyager. This books takes us into the world of the popular character The Doctor. The Doctor is not human and is in fact a holographic projection, and if you've seen any of the Star Trek episodes that revolve around this character, you know that there are humorous yet very fascinating scenarios that come up. That is where this book picks up, exactly where the television series left us.
This book will be a fun read for anyone who likes this lovable character. For those hardcore fans there are definitely things that you will learn about the Doctor that you did not know before, like how he feels about other crew members, how he feels about himself and of course the every funny "addition to his program."
I knew that the character on Voyager was funny but I never knew how funny Robert Picardo was. He uses that same dry humor that the Doctor had on the show and just gives you much more of it then you would get in a single Star Trek episode. Quite frankly, I could not put this book down. This is my only criticism of the book is that it is too short. At 84 pages in length I felt disappointed that it was over and I craved more humorous anecdotes.
The forward by Brannon Braga is also quite hilarious and will give you an insight as to how funny Robert Picardo really is. The illustrations in the book, drawn by Yagher, stay true to the books witty and silly theme and are a nice compliment to the mood of the book.
My favorite thing about this book is that although almost strictly being a comedic piece it still stays true to that Star Trek theme of getting you to think outside of the box. A holographic projections living among humans can conjure up a lot of philosophical scenarios where one questions what it is to be human, be alive and all of those pondering thoughts. Robert Picardo does this in a very witty and humorous way, but it also encourages you to think about traditional philosophical questions as brought about in new and interesting scenarios. This combination of wit and philosophy is why I can't recommend this book enough. You can certainly read it in one night if you choose, which I suspect you will once you pick it up.
