I picked up A Certain Justice, PD James, more or less by accident. I would not.
The story takes place in London, and intrigue is relatively simple: a successful female lawyer learns that his daughter is engaged to a defendant (the lawyer) was acquitted of a murder he committed. She is busy trying to stop it when someone puts a stop to it. It was found the next morning in his firm with a mortal wound in his heart and blood flowing profusely from the head. Inspector Dalgliesh (dog leash?) Is called to solve the mystery.
The Vancouver Sun reports that the story is "absorbing ... PD James is in the top of their form and glory." So says the right on the cover of the book. If the statement is true Sun, PD James is an author that I will benefit others and to be honest, some people obviously benefit from their writing, because the book is a bestseller. I do not understand why.
A Certain Justice is divided into three or more less. The first part is the setting. Venetia Aldridge is busy with his client deserved a murder rap, and see pieces of his life behind the scenes. She has a daughter is sure of one thing: the cold and distant mother think very little about him, dislikes, and probably not even his love. She has a lover some time which is apparently devoid of passion. Ask colleagues ineffective. Everyone in the story is half life and half a reason to kill Venetia Aldridge. The inspection team seems very distracted by the interest received or trivial social slights.
She is murdered, and nobody, nor his colleagues, lovers or family and not the reader's mind. Enter dog on a leash and their subordinates. The author tries to beat some human interest in the subordinates, but failed miserably in the opinion of this player. The same belt dog, apparently, a poet any virtue, making observations of flowers of the season, but leads a monotonous life, withdrawal and classics. Search oozing ice to a final climax.
In the last third of the story, some characters are starting to show some color, but only the girl curiously pathetic murderer and former who are forgiven. Everything is a surprise ending bloody end.
In a world filled with good books, I found myself regretting the time you spent in this case. There are some passages which are interesting (though hardly memorable), and late thirds of the story is moved by force. I developed some sympathy for some of the secondary characters, but still found the motivation of some rather extreme measures to be convincing. Most of the action in history was unnecessary to the plot, and the final solution to the murder was almost devoid of drama.
PD James is apparently a grandmother, and focus on thoughts and fears of the elderly through the book was at least one characteristic unusual history, although I would not say very nice. In all cases, it is not enough for me.
