What is greed? Why is it such a pervasive problem in our culture, in human nature? I believe greed is a substitution of superficial desire in place of timeless values. Webster's Dictionary defines it as "excessive or rapacious desire, esp. for wealth or possessions; avarice; covetousness". And, since desire in the form of greed can never, ever be fulfilled, it will only accelerate until the wheels come off. Greed's ultimate destination therefore is death, because it will not be extinguished until death arrives. Ironically, a greed-filled person feels empty, despite being surrounded by wealth or diversion. Paucity of spirit is inevitable, love is impossible, and distraction is the only solace.
Contrast this with a man whose life's purpose is clear. How do you think he feels? A life rich in purpose and love, cannot ever feel poor. His wealth is something no one can ever foreclose on, and his destination is irrelevant, as he is already "there". Of course, nothing in life is completely black and white. Between the polar opposites of pure greed and pure love is where all of us live. Moving within the shades of gray we reach a tipping point towards either pole.
The tipping point towards greed is long passed for many, and nothing can stop their descent; no other point of view is possible. Our greed-oriented culture is difficult to resist. It seduces us by appealing to our senses, like a placid river beckoning us to swim. We enter it gently, innocently. Then, it becomes swift and sweeps us over dangerous rapids. The ride may be fun for a while, but rocks loom beneath.
Poor Capitalism
The current engine of developed economies is consumerism, which is giving capitalism a bad name. The speed of information made possible by the marvels of technology has enabled commerce to increase standards of living immeasurably. But, what price are we paying, and will we pay in the future? This "standard" is purely material, one that sacrifices not only the earth we inhabit, but our very souls. The west, and now parts of the east, has allowed this seduction to sweep us downstream, to overtake us offering barely a shoulder-shrug in resistance.
Free enterprise, in the purest sense, is an expression of humanity's creativity, and enables economic opportunities to provide a good living to those who work at it. Unfortunately, the ideal of capitalism has been corrupted by greed, which gives birth to an assortment of other dark maladies: dishonesty, deception, power-lust and manipulation. Like a virus, greed infects as it masquerades as love and true value. We accept it because how can we change what appears obviously unchangeable?
This is the point of writing this blog: to change minds, one mind at a time. I have no delusion of being Don Quixote. But, without a collective mind shift, humanity will not survive, accelerating as it is towards the rapids, the rocks. I believe a shift is beginning to occur, as many scientists and spiritualists are changing minds in greater numbers. Extricating us from the powerful tide of consumerism, fighting the current of greed to swim ashore, is humanity's only hope for happiness and true prosperity. All other remedies are mere band-aids on a gushing wound.
