Fictional books are supposed to be entertaining and mostly out of the ordinary. It has to spread your imagination towards heights never envisioned. I think Shutter Island meets these criteria handsomely. It is a fictional novel by Dennis Lehane which was made into a blockbuster movie in 2010.
The story starts with two US marshals traveling on a boat to an island which boards a federal facility. It is a prison cum mental health institution and the dangerous criminals who are mentally challenged are boarded here. The two marshals, Teddy and Chuck are underway to investigate the case of a patient (Rachel Solando) who has escaped under mysterious conditions.
The story encircles around the events that take place on the wretched island, where the case on hand is not the intention of being there for Teddy. He is on the island to find his wife's killer, a fire bug.
The book is gripping throughout. The author does not let your mind wander about, and keeps the story tight and clasp.
Twists and turns is a part of this book. It is the essence of this story. And, the climax will blow your hats away. I needed to read the last chapter twice to come to grips with the end that was on offer. It has been a week since I read this book, and still I can't take my mind off of it, it was that good.
On the other hand, the movie was a mere subset of what the novel has to offer. The movie is a true replica of the book, minus the descriptions and thoughts going on inside Teddy's head.
