The ancient Chinese made it customary to burn amber during large festivities, as amber, when heated under the right conditions, produces the oil of amber. This was combined carefully with nitric acid to create artificial musk - a resin with a peculiar musky odor that scented their homes and festivities. Although modern perfumes might include it as an ingredient, it usually never is actual amber but scents referred to as amber are often created and patented to emulate the opulent golden warmth of the fossil. The presence of insects in amber was noticed by Pliny the Elder in his Naturalis Historia and led him to the theory that at some point, amber had to be in a liquid state to cover the bodies of insects. Hence he gave it the expressive name of succinum or gum-stone, a name that is still in use today.
Baltic Amber has been extensively traded since 2000 years ago, and the natives called it glaes referring to its see-through quality. However, before we get any further let us get to know the few forms of it. Natural Baltic amber, which has undergone the mechanical treatment of grinding, cutting, turning or polishing devoid of any change to its natural properties, is the best quality of natural Baltic amber that you would lay hands on. Modified Baltic amber are gemstone subjected only to thermal or high-pressure treatment, which changed its physical properties, including the degree of transparency and color, or shaped under similar conditions out of one nugget, previously cut to the required size.
Pressed Baltic amber is made of Baltic amber pieces pressed in high temperature and under high pressure without adding any other substance to it. Bonded Baltic amber is made of two or more parts of natural, modified or reconstructed Baltic amber bonded together with a colorless binding agent. Almost 90% of the world's extractable amber is still located in the Kaliningrad Oblast of Russia on the Baltic Sea. Pieces of amber torn from the seafloor are cast up by the waves, and collected by hand, dredging or diving. Amber is also mined, both in open works and in underground galleries. The nodules from the blue earth have to be freed from matrix and divested of their opaque crust, which can be done in revolving barrels containing sand and water. Erosion removes this crust from sea-worn amber.
It is usually the yellow-orange-brown colors that are associated with the color 'amber', but Baltic amber might also come in whitish color through a pale lemon yellow, to brown and almost black. Other more uncommon colors include red amber also known as 'cherry amber', green amber, and even blue amber, which is rare and highly sought after. The cloudy amber and opaque amber are very common as it contains numerous minute bubbles and so, is called 'bony amber',while most highly prized amber is transparent and see through. Baltic amber is called Prussian amber and is found as irregular nodules in marine glauconitic sand, called blue earth, occurring in the Lower Oligocene strata of Samland in Prussia. After 1945 this territory around Königsberg was turned into Kaliningrad Oblast, Russia, where Baltic Amber is systematically mined.
