As an archaeologist, it seemed that every time I had my head down and bottom up trying to tickle a friable fragment of bone from its thousand year old bed, I would be asked a wicked question: "Found anything interesting, yet?" I would take a deep breath, look up and see a grinning face and I would have to be ready to answer "Yes!" Then the person would ask me to prove it and I would tell a compelling story of what I had found.
As a business consultant, sitting in an empty office late at night and peering at my computer screen reading yet another business report, a passing cleaner would stop dragging his 'Henry' vacuum cleaner, give me a wide beam and ask the same inevitable question: "Anything interesting in that stuff, mate?" The story I told was usually less than compelling because I had a conventional view that 'Business' is purely commercial.
I thought a business exited to make money for its investors. That was until I asked myself a 'what if?' question. What if, beneath the financial facade of 'business' lies a living, self-regulating, social system called 'Enterprise'? Systems of trade and commerce are archaeologically evident throughout human history and prehistory. Why should it be any less evident now?
ENTERPRISE: A MICROCOSM OF SOCIETY
When I apply my archaeological skills and look beneath the financial facade I see economic activity, for sure. I see exchange for mutual benefit. The type of exchange, however, is much more subtle, intricate, subjective and personal. It is infinitely more social than financial.
To really understand what drives performance, what creates wealth and what lies beneath the numbers, we need to take a different approach. We need to stop keeping score and start looking at what is really going on. It is a bit like looking at the world through a dragons eye lens - one of those multi-faceted domed lenses that replicate a whole image on each face. It shows a microcosm, a complete reflection of the bigger picture.
THINK DIFFERENTLY ABOUT BUSINESS
So what? So taking this tangential, seemingly irrelevant point of view, what would be different and how could 'business' and our lives change? It would pose a challenge. The challenge would be to think differently about work and business, even to think differently about archaeology and archaeologists! We would need to:
- Uncover what and how Enterprise achieves the evolutionary and development needs of humanity and individuals
- Discover how Enterprise exploits time and talent to generate treasure
- Access the social resources that are hidden beneath the financial facade.
Business is measured from one perspective - a financial one. In business terms, we simply haven't developed the instruments that allow us to 'see' and sense anything beyond money. If we can study the underpinning society, using well-established tools and techniques, we can begin to understand what generates wealth - Enterprise.
TIME, TALENT AND TREASURE
Beneath the financial facade of 'Business', lies a living, self-regulating, social system called 'Enterprise'. It is a microcosm of society, our society, and is the power that generates wealth as well as money.
Challenge your assumptions that managing money and driving down cost is all there is to business. Inspire your ideas by considering that the evolutionary purpose of Business is Enterprise and that Enterprise is primarily a social system full of time, talent and treasure. Look at your business models and map their workings to reveal the architecture of the underpinning social system, not just its information or financial systems. Bring to light the hidden time, talent and treasure just waiting within your Enterprise.
