Colleges are full of students who consider themselves intellectually advanced and interested in finding out the details of many complex ideas. Quite a few of the students who fit this profile have decided on entering an English degree program. These students are looking forward to analyzing literature long forgotten by the masses and applying meaning to that literature and attempting to place that piece of literature in a modern context.
There are many different components to entering the English degree program, but the one constant that remains for all participants is that they must work to become advanced writers. Many professors in an English course will assign multiple essays on a variety of subjects within their courses. It is incumbent upon students to do two things that can help assure success. If students are able to understand and apply proper grammatical structure to their writing and have diction that is rich in complexity, they will have great success in college as someone who is an English major.
There are many different literature courses listed in course catalogs for English degree seekers. Regardless of the institution, these degree candidates may be passionate about certain aspects of literature and will choose to load their schedule with a heavy emphasis on certain course work. Major course work in English literature includes course work in William Shakespeare, British literature, American literature and Poetry.
William Shakespeare can be considered the "Father of Modern English". Some may balk at this title due to the level of complexity in his works, but most English that is spoken today can find some root or augmentation from Shakespeare. Students in English degree programs will study his poetry and his plays. Some of these students' favorite plays may be "The Merchant of Venice", "Julius Caesar", "King Lear" and "Richard III"
British literature is the study of literature that has originated in some way or another within the British Isles. Students may use two large books known as the "Norton Anthology" because the amount of writing from a culture that has been writing for over a thousand years is incredibly voluminous. Early to modern British writers are covered. Students will enjoy reading the writing of James Joyce, Jonathan Swift, Charles Dickens, Oscar Wilde and Thomas Donne.
American literature is similar to British literature in that these courses cover the writing that marks the American experience. The chief difference is the amount of time covered. Since the United States of America's colonial period, this is only roughly 400 years of work. Some famous American writers students will read are Mark Twain, Emily Dickinson, William Faulkner, and Edgar Allan Poe.
Poetry is the oldest form of writing, dating back to Homer and the ancient Greeks. There are many different ideas of what is good poetry and students will learn that professors can have a wide range of views on poetry. One thing that remains constant: poetry must be written in verse form and it must be loaded with figurative language.
