Mandala as a tool for spiritual growth and form for connecting with yourself, can be used in a tremendous number of applications. It can be all engrossing and a fabulous form of self expression and self discovery. Being involved with mandalas in your everyday life can be creative and inspiring. Here is an introduction to Mandalas.
The subject of Mandala is huge, as the mandala has been around one could say since time immemorial and has been used by many cultures. Mandala is a Sanskrit word meaning circle, or centre. It also implies completion. Traditionally a mandala consisted of a circle depicting the cosmos within a square representing the earth, symbolically showing them to be in balance. The earth also does stand for the human element.
Mandalas were used as a form of communication between ancient cultures in Atlantis and Lemuria. Also later in Egyptian, Islamic, Celtic, Japanese, Indian, European, Native American and Aboriginal.
A mandala can be painted or be created through sand play, and currently many therapists focus on sand play therapy. Sandpainting is the art of pouring coloured sands onto a surface to make a painting. These can be ritual paintings for religious or healing ceremonies, sometimes referred to as a dry painting. This is practiced by Native Americans, Tibetan monks, by Indians, Australian Aborigines and Latin Americans on certain Christian holy days.
Application Today of Mandala Expression
On a deeper level, the sacred geometry of these art forms assist us to create our future and accelerate our evolution, by connecting on a cellular level to the unconscious universal mind. Used in a more everyday manner, mandalas are there to be of service to you in your contemplation and clearing of unwanted baggage.
If you are unsure how to begin designing your own mandala, there are many wonderful mandala colouring books available, both for adults and children.
Before creating or colouring a mandala, is to recommended that you centre yourself and be open to your own heart's knowing to reveal something to you. This could be in colours and design. Some people find it easier connecting with the left hand held above the paper or material to begin with.
The mandala is taught by many people as a short course or workshop. Here the context can be as you see and feel it. Normally it is balanced, with a square of paper or material and beginning with a circle in the centre. This can be of any size. From here, follow your heart's inspiration. Some people like to be more particular with detail and use a compass. It is not easy to describe what to do next, as it is up to you tuning into yourself and going for it.
However, one method would be to do more squares and circles, they can be coming out from a particular position. There are not really any strong rules set in place when using it as a form of self expression and contemplation. The mandala will help you greatly to connect with feelings, releasing and transmuting these as you work.
My advice is to trust yourself, have fun and experiment with whatever creative materials you have on hand, whether it be pencils, paints, pastels or other things. Enjoy it!
