The Jack Russell Terrier (JRT) is a small dog with a white body and patches of black or tan. The dog has to be more than 50% white to qualify as a JRT under the breed standard of the JRT Club of America. It can be hard to find accurate Jack Russell information because of the misconceptions about this breed. The JRT is not recognized by any of the major all-breed dog clubs like the AKC - that's why it has its own separate organization to organize competitions and trials.
The Origin of the JRT
The JRT is named after the man who first bred the dogs, the Parson John Russell (whose nickname was Jack). This is also the origin of the name of the Parson Russell Terrier - this is a "show dog" offshoot of the JRT. The Parson Russell is recognized by the AKC and is allowed to compete in dog shows.
John Russell was a fox hunter who needed small terriers to follow the fox down into its hole and keep it there until the hunter arrived. This explains many of the natural traits of the Jack Russell Terrier, such as a tendency to be energetic and hyperactive, its bravery and courage, its curiosity and intelligence, and its independent will.
It was partly due to the JRT's use in popular movies and TV shows that they have become such common house pets. One of the most well-known famous JRTs is Eddie from the hit TV sitcom "Frasier." Eddie was actually played by two different dogs: Moose and his son Enzo. Moose was actually given away by his first owners because they couldn't train him! He was adopted by a professional dog trainer who turned him into a star. Moose and Enzo also played the role of Skip in the film "My Dog Skip" starring Frankie Muniz.
What's Unique About JRTs?
The JRT personality is inclined to mischief and misbehavior. They are easy to excite and very affectionate towards their family. They have a reputation for being hard to train and being prone to aggression, but this is mostly because of the misunderstandings surrounding how they should be trained. Because they are a unique breed created for a unique purpose - fox hunting - they need a training approach that takes into account their natural instincts. This is why having good, accurate Jack Russell Terrier information is so important for owners.
Because JRTs are very strong-willed and independent, harsh or dominant training methods don't work well on them. In order to train them properly you need specific Jack Russell information - not just general dog training theories. But they do need their owner to take the lead - otherwise they will try to take over the pack themselves. This is their natural tendency. The owner has to try to become the "team captain" for their dog - the term "pack leader" often makes people think they have to dominate their dog in some way. Really they have to teach their dog to trust them and follow them by choice.
