Miraculous moments of life can be found in the simplest of happenings. This particular "moment" came as my wife and I were planning and experiencing our fortieth anniversary.
What do you do for your Fortieth anniversary? We are fortunate in the sense that we don't "need" anything. There are some things we may want and trips we would like to take, but when it's all said and done, there's nothing we need. We have enough "stuff". Therefore, the decision was made to treat ourselves to a night on the town and a stay at a five star hotel, and we did just that.
Our brief but pleasant getaway started out at the Omni Hotel with a suite overlooking downtown. We had an early check in, a relaxing afternoon around the hotel, dinner at 6:30 at a nice restaurant, then a short cab ride to great lounge to listen to some live music and do some dancing. We love dancing. A late return to the hotel found us exhausted and hungry, so at a little after midnight I called room service. Breakfast was served at 1:00 AM then off to sleep.
The next morning, our anniversary date, we had massages at the hotel spa scheduled at 10:00 AM and then a late check out. The weekend was just about done - the celebration of the 40th year was complete, not over, just recognized as celebrated. We'll celebrate for the next 364 days by living each day with unbridled enthusiasm for life.
On the way home we pulled into a restaurant and there it was, right there on the curb, the moment.
As we turned in I saw two people, a lady and a man, sitting on the grass facing each other. This was on the grass between two buildings at a driveway; it wasn't in a park, but more like a parking lot. At first glance it appeared like they were two homeless people talking face to face, so intent, I thought that they may be arguing.
Since I was driving, Linda looked over to see what was going on, or to see if there was a problem. She said they appeared to be talking and eating, and then she said, well, she was eating and they were both talking. Upon closer observation, just short of staring invasively, we came to find out that it was indeed a homeless lady enjoying a meal provided by a young man that obviously wasn't homeless. He was a clean shaven, neatly dressed young adult.
I was mesmerized by the intensity of the young man as he listened to the lady talk, appearing to hang on every word. Eyes locked and hearts lifted, it was a moving moment. It reminds me of the premise of the motion picture Evan Almighty where God, played by Morgan Freeman, said that it simply takes "one act of random kindness at a time" to change the world.
We may forget what we had for lunch on our anniversary day, but we'll never forget what a homeless lady had for lunch on February 8th, 2009. She had, hopefully, at least for a moment, the same thing Linda and I have had for forty years, love and companionship.
Let's not take our moments of blessings for grated............. ever.
