Monk is a crime drama show but with a unique twist. The show manages to bring in humor along with the mystery and crime elements through its lead character of Adrian Monk, played by Tony Shalhoub. Monk is an obsessive compulsive but still an ingenious detective. The story of the show revolves around the life of Monk and how he manages to solve crimes, despite his weird ways and his funny antics.
Monk had been a very successful detective in San Francisco until he meets with an accident and be became quite neurotic. After the accident he develops quite a lot of phobias and became obsessive compulsive personality. Monk's medical condition was such that he had been declared unfit to serve on the force as a detective.
However, when Randall Disher, played by Jason Gray Stanford and Captain Leland Stottlemeyer, played by Ted Levine go through rough times they ask Monk to help them along with Sharona Fleming, played by Bitty Schram who is his personal nurse helping him through the day.
Through the series Monk along with his colleagues tries to solve various crimes and mysteries trying to put together the pieces of the puzzles and clues. The concept of the show is not unique but it is the treatment of the show which makes it stand out from the rest of the detective shows. What makes the show unique is the way that Monk tries to solve all his cases in rather a unique way. He has a phobia of nearly every single thing which makes situations quite interesting and hilarious while at the same time viewers get sympathetic with him.
His unique behavior makes way for some great comedy on the show. He is also obsessive in nature and wants everything to be just perfect. Throughout the episodes of Monk seasons 1-7 DVD boxsets, Monk keeps arranging and re-arranging stuff till he drives everyone else crazy. He fears germs and almost anything that he touches which makes him lovable but quite funny.
Tony Shalhoub's performance as Monk is quite flawless and he fits the character perfectly as he portrays Monk's obsessions and phobias with perfection. Tony had received a Golden Globe award and an Emmy Award for Best Actor for his performance in Monk.
However, Monk's character is not the only strong performance in the series. The role of Sharona Fleming by Bitty Schram had also been quite commendable and she too had received a Golden Globe award for her performance in the series. Her character is quite straightforward and blunt and she comes across as the witty nurse who tries to keep Monk go through his days.
