Robert the Bruce disagreed with the outcome of the Great Cause in 1292, which gave the Crown of Scotland to John Balliol, he viewed it as unjust in that it prevented his branch of family their rightful place. He sided with Edward I against John, he received a respite for all his debts owed to the English Exchequer.
In 1296, Robert the Bruce and his father swore fealty to Edward I, but the following year Robert supported the Scottish revolt against Edward. After William Wallace resigned as Guardian of Scotland after the Battle of Falkirk it was Robert the Bruce and John Comyn who replaced him. However these two clashed terribly and a third guardian, William Lamberton was added in an attempt to restore balance to the alliance. In 1300, Robert the Bruce resigned from the guardianship and was replaced by Sir Gilbert, First Lord de Umfraville.
In July 1301, King Edward launched his sixth campaign into Scotland, the Bruce along with other nobles submitted to him. In 1303, Edward invaded again, he conquered the entire country, all the leading Scots with the exception of William Wallace surrendered to him. Edward began implementing strategies designed to absorb Scotland into England. Wallace, meanwhile was captured and executed. Bruce believed that the Scottish throne belonged to him more than any other but his dual policy of supporting both English And Scottish armies had weakened his claim somewhat in favour of John Comyn. He led Comyn into a trap, attacked and killed him, for this deed Robert was excommunicated.
