We all know that the book is always better than the movie. At least that's the conventional wisdom. However, as useful as the conventional wisdom is often Sometimes we do well to put aside and do exactly the opposite. It's painful for me to say, after all, I'm all about books. Here is a list some of my favorite movies that were much better than the book:
The firm
Although the book of John Grisham, OK, not even close to the film. Say what you want about Tom Cruise and his eccentricities, but they really nailed that part. Who better to play a young career, self-centered, obsessed hustler?
However, writers, and the genius of director Sydney Pollack is really to thank. They did a great job supporting the parts of the book worked, and replacement of equipment is not worth better.
If you have to choose between the two, choose the movie.
The Green Line
Stephen King novels are notoriously difficult to bring to the big screen. It has to do with the quality and style of his writing. It just does not lend itself to any other medium. King can cast a spell that can contain one of the interests of thousands of pages at a time. But on-screen stories often fall flat.
Not so with The Green Mile. Do not get me wrong. I loved this book. I think this is one of the best del Rey. But to see this wonderful story translated to the big screen was a magical experience. Of course this has much to do with Michael Clarke Duncan and interpretation notable for Gentle Giant John Coffey. Duncan stole the show.
Frank Darabont is not so bad, or both adapt the script and direct this wonderful movie.
Jurassic Park
I loved Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton. I remember staying up late at night to read it. When he finally finished, I felt. I wanted more. This was the book that led me to read everything Crichton has ever written.
But the movie was spectacular. I was out of this world. Steven Spielberg called it the Law of parks. The dinosaurs were real. Too real. It's almost as if you really recovered.
The silence of the lambs
I am a big fan of Thomas Harris, though, write so slow is frustrating. Silence of the Lambs is an exceptional book, perhaps his best.
The film, however, has no equal. He is one of the best films ever made, and indeed, read the book took away from him. Anthony Hopkins is just great. Dr. Lecter is not real, and fear more so than in the book.
And then there's Jodie Foster as the lead. A perfect fit. I love this movie.
The Lord of the Rings
There are many Tolkien fans here that would disagree with me, but still. There are parts of this trilogy are boring. Yes, I said. Laboriously boring. So bored, I'm not sure what I could to force me to read it all.
However, the films were wonderful. I am not always agree with some of the casting choices, but the images were striking. I think Tolkien would be approved.
The club lucky star
Amy Tan's The Joy Luck Club is his best novel. Is a wonderful story. However, the casting and direction of the film was excellent.
I'd rather watch this film at any time to read the book. Sorry Amy.
The Hunt for Red October
Fans of Tom Clancy's may disagree, but I found the book almost unreadable. In addition, with the exception of no remorse, I think that all their material unreadable.
But the movie was incredible. It is by far one of the best films of all time. The cast is magnificent, with many who Oscar worthy. However, Sean Connery stole the show.
The Color Purple
Alice Walker's novel is fantastic. One of the best I've read. But I'm sorry Alice, the film was much better.
Why? Well simple. We Steven Spielberg at his best level, the leadership of the likes of Whoopie Goldberg, Danny Glover and Oprah Winfrey. Great movie.
The Bourne Identity
The book Robert Ludlum's not really good. It's too long, and in some regions, such as when girls are abducted, are ridiculous.
The film, other hand, is a journey full of action in Russia. And to think I was about to jump out of it.
2001: A space odyssey
book by Arthur C. Clarke is the first level. I remember I liked it, I read it twice back to back. The rest of the series is great reading as well.
But nothing compares to the representation Stanley Kubrick film of this book. The creepy HAL still gives me nightmares.
There are many more examples there. But as I said before, are some of my favorites. Next time someone tells you that the book is still best course to get his way.
