Quite often the headlines regarding the antics of Heavy Metal bands are of drunkenness, debauchery, and drug use. It almost has become as commonplace for a metal star to be in rehab as a pop star to be on MTV. Against the grain of this stereotype stands Matthew Barlow, the lead singer of iconic metal bands Iced Earth and Pyramaze.
Matthew Barlow was born in Biloxi, Mississippi on March 10, 1970. His brother-in-law is the highly respected metal guitarist Jon Schaffer, and in 1995 he asked Barlow to fill in as the lead singer for his band Iced Earth. Their original singer quit the band due to conflicts with Schaffer (as would the rest of the original lineup eventually), and Matthew Barlow found himself thrust into the spotlight of rock stardom. He integrated his unique voice into Iced Earth's edgy sound and recorded nine studio albums with the band between 1995 and 2003, achieving wealth and stardom on par with the biggest musical acts in the world.
Like many Americans, the September 11th terrorist attacks shook Barlow to his core. As time passed he felt compelled to leave the rock star life and start to contribute to society in a more meaningful way. After 18 months of wanting to leaving and arguing with his brother-in-law/bandmate Jon Schaffer, Matthew Barlow left Iced Earth to pursue a career in law enforcement.
This is not completely unheard of in music; blues legend Gatemouth Brown was a sheriff in New Mexico for a period of years in the 1970's and rock stars from Elvis Presley to Keith Richards to Johnny Cash have been issued ceremonial badges at certain points in their lives. What makes Barlow's decision unique is that it was not motivated by financial hardship (like Gatemouth) or irreverent mockery (Elvis receiving a ceremonial DEA badge), but from actual dedication to the craft of law enforcement.
Matthew Barlow is a highly rated and well-thought-of police officer in Georgetown, DE. Barlow went through the same training as all of his police brethren and he did not ask for or receive any kind of special treatment because of his successful music career. Rather, he has applied his vocal talents as a member of the First State Force Band, a law enforcement chorale group that performs at schools with songs encouraging kids to be respectful, peaceful, and drug-free members of society.
In late-2007 Schaffer and Barlow buried the hatchet and began playing music together once more. Currently, Officer Barlow is back in the studio recording with Iced Earth and may join the band on tour however his commitment to law enforcement remains as he is still a full-time active duty Georgetown Police Officer.
