Film Review: "The Untouchables" is a classic story of the mafia who stand on its own because of their own larger than life performance and style of director Brian De Palma. All features of the mafia movie are present, but are taken to a whole new level stylistic characterizations both large and rich world of crime and corruption that has created for us to see this movie. History is a very basic plot against evil, the characters are black and white, the film is the battle between these two parties. Given this simplistic, yet complex nature of this film, it is difficult not follow the fate of Eliot Ness (Kevin Costner), as it is set to take up and down and colorful Chicago gangster Al Capone (Robert De Niro), particularly through the excitement, action and moments of great character.
Eliot Ness arrives in Chicago determined to destroy the world crime organized by Al Capone in the 1920 banning of the time. It is a principle without success largely because of their simplicity which led him to believe that local police are on their side. Down on the same lack of success, is the former Police Academy Malone (Sean Connery) who helps having Ness to see take this fight to the mafia completely different and more violent terms. Together, they create an elite team "untouchables" of the police can not be purchased.
The cast of this film is at the heart of what makes this movie work so well. Kevin Costner is perfect as right arrow Eliot Ness transmits a natural and simple good guy for his personality that seeps into the character easily. Sean Connery works great in the center of gravity and a mentor Ness, who is cynical to the bone, but was convinced by the optimism of Ness to help fight the bad guys. Robert De Niro obviously has a lot of fun to play Al Capone and creates a film very memorable villains so bad you can not see him every time he appears on the screen. Other players like Andy Garcia and Charles Martin Smith, complete the group of untouchables are also excellent, keeping their own and make their own contribution to the great moments of action and character. Through these characters, the film is composed of funny, sad, dramatic moments and take you on an emotional roller coaster throughout the film that sticks to your seat until it's over.
Be a lot of Brian De Palma film "The Untouchables" contains a series of scenes before, even if they are timid in comparison with some previous work Palma. The famous sequence of one of his subordinates Capone attacks not to a baseball bat because history as one of the scenes Mafia villain make the film, and works largely because of its simplicity and what is not (as directed by De Palma saw the scene in "Scarface"). Malone died at the end of the film is perhaps even more shocking, not only in how it's done, but because we learned to love this character for the course of the film to see the bottom only makes us want Ness to require some sort of revenge. These scenes and more that some see the chart, but done with the right amount of violent intentions are not exaggerated, but increase the drama to another level that is drawn on his account even more.
"The Untouchables" is a great mafia film that manages to transcend its genre and deliver a story larger than life characters with memorable you sweep with him during his run time of two hours.
TECHNICAL REVIEW: The video transfer is quite reasonable but everything seems smooth with grainness significantly affecting the sharpness and clarity of the image in general. The audio transfer is mostly very good, but never really transcend their stereo soundtrack of origin and therefore lacks depth and does not take full advantage of the surroundings. In general, it is reasonable to transfer a film of this age, but could be better.
REVIEW EXTRAS: The extras package on this single disc DVD is comprised of more than one hour of high quality short films that cover all important aspects of production. The four major films specifically designed to cover everything that DVD release of the design of the film's creation, and has a series of historic interviews and new players and the team offer a wide insight to the production. The battle for the shares of Robert De Niro, the search for Brian De Palma to make a commercial success, the discovery of Kevin Costner Sean Connery was unhappy about how to film the death scene shots at him and many many interesting stories that some see these films. There is also the original six-minute featurette 1987, which is more than promotional information, and a trailer. In general, an excellent complement extras, all the more impressive given that this is a case of a DVD edition.
