Directly exposed to enemy fire, Master Payne, by their own efforts, temporarily held in attacks around fire with his pistol and moves from one position to another pick up and throw grenades enemy attack. In doing so, was wounded in the hands and arms.

Despite all their efforts, the Indian soldiers gave way pressure increased over the enemy and the battalion commander and several advisers and a few soldiers, retired. His sustained and heroic personal efforts in this action were outstanding and undoubtedly saved the lives of many soldiers and many Indians his fellow directors. Agent Payne for repeated acts of personal bravery and outstanding disinterested conduct in this operation were been an inspiration to all States in Vietnam, United and Australian soldiers who served with him. His bravery is in the most tradition of the Australian Army. Keith Payne has been invested with his Victoria Cross by Queen Elizabeth II of England at the Royal Yacht Britannia in Brisbane April 13, 1970.

'Batman Begins' is perhaps the first true and appropriate translation of the Batman comic book to the silver screen. Sure, there have been four previous big screen attempts, and even Tim Burton's first Batman from 1989 was a solid film, but in 'Batman Begins' we get the most accurate translation of the character, how he got there, and for the first time, making him the star of the story. Previous Batman films have made the villains the stars with Batman being the host so to speak. In this case, Batman himself, and by extension, Bruce Wayne, is the central character. Director Christopher Nolan takes the franchise in a wonderful new direction, thankfully jettisoning all the rubbish from the previous film, Batman And Robin, and grounding it all in a sense of realism that would almost have you believe it could really happen. In this film, Batman is perhaps the darkest and even scariest he's ever been which is welcome surprise; he's almost on the edge of being the anti-hero and by focusing the story in this area, 'Batman Begins' contains a richness and texture that the previous film don't come anywhere close to matching.

We start with Bruce Wayne in a hell-hole prison, a man lost but trying to understand the criminal mind by becoming one himself. We get flashbacks to his childhood, why he became afraid of bats, the incident where his parents are murdered in front of him (and not by the Joker as in Burton's film), culminating in his meeting with the enigmatic Ducard (Liam Neeson), a man who offers him the path to a secret group called the League of Shadows, a vigilante group who restore balance when greed and corruption have totally taken over society. After receiving ninja and mental training, Wayne is given one final test to prove his worth; he must execute a criminal. On this point, he disagrees with Ducard and ultimately the two come to blows, with Wayne barely escaping alive. Wayne then returns to Gotham with all his training and decides to create a symbol of fear for criminals in Gotham City, 'Batman'. As he goes about fighting crime as his alter-ego, Wayne comes to discover that Ducard is still alive and is actually the mysterious super-villain Ras Al Ghul, who has a diabolical plan to let Gotham destroy itself so it can be rebuilt in the name righteousness. Only Batman can stop him.

The storyline on the surface is perhaps quite the norm for a superhero origin story, but the first point it endears itself with is creating three-dimensional characters, and then getting quality actors to play them. Christian Bale is great as Batman/Bruce Wayne, and is absolutely threatening as Batman in particular. One sequence where he interrogates a corrupt cop with a voice straight from hell is frightening and dramatic. Liam Neeson is spot on as Ducard as well as the villainous Ras who serves as a foil for Batman, who in effect is Ras' student who ultimately rejected him. The remaining actors are also excellent; Michael Caine doesn't quite look like a potential Alfred but he definitely makes the character his own, Gary Oldman is perfectly understated as the up-and-coming Lt. Gordon, Cillian Murphy is creepy as the film's second villain The Scarecrow, Morgan Freeman is great as a James Bond 'Q' style character who helps to give Wayne all the tools he needs to be Batman, and only Katie Holmes doesn't fit well. Somehow a former Dawson's Creek star just doesn't fit in to this type of film.

The action set-pieces in this film are spectacular; Batman's first appearance to defeat a group of thugs and crime boss Carmine Falcone is effective, as is the final sequence where Batman and Ras battle it out one final time with Batman reluctantly letting his former mentor die to save Gotham City. Surprisingly, all the action plays second fiddle to the story which covers a lot of the pathos in the Batman character, starting with his fear of bats and his guilt over his parents' death. All of this makes Bruce Wayne perhaps the most flawed and internally conflicted characters ever to appear in a superhero film and serves to give him more depth and texture.

Where this film also scores major points is its realism; Batman only becomes who he is over a certain period of time as Wayne experiments with different looks and technologies until he finally settles on the look and feel he wants to properly enforce his crime-fighting in Gotham City. Even the batmobile looks more like an army assaut vehicle rather than a stylised black bat-looking car and this is all very welcome, especially when compared to the previous film entries which despite certain strengths look pale by comparison to this movie. Even the Scarecrow is realistic; what is really a cartoon villain is actually portrayed with enough realism to make you believe any one could be such a character.

"Batman Begins" is an excellent film in its own right; as a Batman film, it's the only true Batman film.

A great deal is written about the importance of a strong opening for a novel, and especially if a fantastic hook can be created in the first paragraph or two. And much effort is devoted to the significance of a terrific title. But little time is spent discussing a brilliant ending. Yet doesn't a powerful finish to a story deserve equal shrift with the aforementioned heavyweights? There are several options and techniques that respected writers have utilized to leave the reader with a lasting impression of a work.

The Poignant Ending is Example Number One

Some years ago I was discussing powerful endings for novels with a long-time mentor and friend of mine, Noel King, who I'm sad to note has recently passed away. My erudite friend mentioned that he'd never found anything more dramatic than the ending of A FAREWELL TO ARMS, in which the lieutenant must leave his wife's body as it lay in a hospital bed after she hemorrhaged to death, also losing their unborn child in the process. Hemingway wrote: It was like saying good-by to a statue. I went out and left the hospital and walked back to the hotel in the rain.

I might also offer the ending in THE FIXER as an example of an incredibly powerful finish: Some, as the carriage clattered by and they glimpsed the fixer, were openly weeping, wringing their hands. One thinly bearded man clawed his face. One or two waved at Yakov. Some shouted his name. In THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME, I have never forgotten Hugo's line describing Quasimodo's remains when they were touched: When an attempt was made to loosen him from the skeleton which he clasped, he crumbled into dust. And I still recall my grief at the ending of Kipling's THE LIGHT THAT FAILED: Torpenhow knelt under the lee of the camel, with Dick's body in his arms.

Love Conquering All Seems to be a Certain Path to Success

At the opposite extreme is the Shakespearean approach to his comedies, in which love conquering all is the overriding theme. A Romance writer almost always provides a satisfying ending when the heroine gets her man. Or on occasion vice versa. Along these same lines, a writer of commercial fiction can be relatively comfortable if he or she can craft a story that fulfills the reader's aspirations for the protagonist, regardless of the trials and tribulations along the way.

An Open Thread is Often a Great Mechanism to Close a Novel

If we think about some of our most widely read contemporary authors, the opportunity at the end of a story to provide the hint for a sequel is never overlooked. James Patterson does this as well as anyone, and a good reason why so many people come back for more of his material. (He has 31 #1 New York Times bestsellers as of this article, which is a record, and not bad for someone who many in the literati deem to be a poor writer.) Thomas Harris did a spectacular job with open threads in the Hannibal series, especially the ones that involved Lector always eluding the FBI at the end. Libraries are full of stories that begat stories, some of which were flagrantly presaged in the endings of their predecessors. Handled with care, this is a terrific way to close a novel, but it requires skill so the reader doesn't feel shortchanged.

Which Brings us to the Denouement

Here is arguably the most common but quite often most difficult type of ending for a lot of writers to pull off well. I often judge the skill of the writer, and hence the quality of the story, by how much the author has to explain at the end for the reader. In some cases, a detailed denouement is indeed necessary to provide the reader with a fuller understanding of some of the less significant but nonetheless still important plot elements. But if handled poorly, a lengthy, multi-leveled denouement can be a sign of either lazy writing--or a self-exposition of the limitations of the author.

Select a Closing that Will Make the Reader Remember Your Story

The ability to create a memorable closing brings me to GONE WITH THE WIND, and Scarlett saying: "... after all, tomorrow is another day." Here is a book of over 300,000 words that is filled with rich characters and grand characterizations, yet if I asked 100 people who read the book at any time in their respective lives to recite the last line, the majority would be able to do so, or at least come close.

Give the Same Effort to the Ending as to the Opening

The ability to hook the reader at the earliest possible stage of the narrative is an integral component of any novelist's thought process. Experienced writers are always considering ways to motivate people to read their next book. There is no better method than by providing a satisfying ending to their current work, regardless of the technique that is used. And I'm convinced that notable writers spend as much time on their endings as they do on their openings. It only makes sense.

For many people both in India and the West yoga is more than a way to stay in shape, it is a way of life. Of course, this is the traditional purpose of yoga which actually encompasses much more than just the physical poses that are so common in the West. However, even if you are only doing Western fitness-based yoga, will you find that after some time yoga begins to define a part of who you are. There are many different variations of yoga available in the West including "flowing" yoga, a yoga and Pilates mix, and even "hot" yoga, yoga done in a hot room so that you sweat out toxins while you exercise. Yoga is a very individualized way to exercise; you only do the poses to the level at which you are comfortable. That also means that classes should be a very comfortable place where you feel safe enough push yourself to your limits, but not beyond. Because of this, many yoga classes have been created to put people together from the same community such as prenatal yoga, yoga for women, or gay yoga.

Yoga is all about focusing your mind and body toward the task at hand. It is much easier to do so if you are in a situation in which you feel comfortable. Even the yoga class itself is designed to make you feel comfortable. It starts out with basic breathing and warm up exercises that will help your mind clear out all the cobwebs of the day. Then you move into more challenging exercises and poses.

You might even find that you class combines traditional yoga with Pilates exercises to strengthen your core muscles. In this case the work will become more and more challenging until right before the end of the class.

Then again you will engage in a cool down session and some more breathing and mediation exercises before you go on your way.

The experiences of color and music have always been closely intertwined. From the days of the ancient Greeks through the Middle Ages and into the Renaissance, both color and music were widely considered to possess inherent moral powers to influence their viewers and listeners for better or for worse. Even in contemporary times, many mystics and followers of occult traditions have insisted that particular colors and types of music, especially synchronized combinations of color-music, possess the ability to induce trances and hypnotic states and healing.

In contrast with art that heals, recent studies of epilepsy concur that some types of seizures can be triggered by the color-music patterns of video games and animated cartoons. In a world filled with multimedia, an examination of the possible association between color and music has become increasingly significant.

Composers fond of relating colors to their music include Liszt, Beethoven, and Rimsky-Korsakoff. Liszt described his dramatic intentions with decorative phrases: "More pink here," "This is too black," "I want it all azure." Beethoven is reported to have referred to B minor as the black key. And Rimsky-Korsakoff associated the color of sunlight with the key of C major and red with the note F#.

Wassily Kandinsky (1866-1944), one of the most well known artists and philosophers of his day, believed unequivocally in the link between color and sound. In his 1914 book, The Art of Spiritual Harmony, Kandinsky postulates that cross-associations among the senses exist in all highly sensitive people.

Piet Mondrian (1872-1944), a native of Holland, believed that art could elevate man. Mondrian's late works are perhaps best exemplified by a large piece called Broadway Boogie Woogie.

Mondrian's composition is a grid of rectangles and squares balanced with almost mathematical precision. In this piece, Mondrian uses only white, red, blue and yellow. His rhythmic arrangement of the geometric forms are accelerated and syncopated in an unmistakably musical way. The singular use of primary colors also echoes the primitive, almost primordial aliveness of early jazz.

The works of Kenneth Noland (b. 1924) and other American color field painters feature color as the most central aspect of painting. For Noland, color placement is clearly akin to musical composition. Noland believes that each color possesses a pitch "that resonates beyond itself and affects other, adjacent colors, which in turn affect the overall palette of the composition."

Colors, Noland insists, can also be placed at higher and lower pitches and "can be composed like chords across the spectrum." Colors can also be used in conjunction with each other like major and minor chords, and repeated in varying ways to create visual counterpoint. Noland's color-music analogies extend into harmony, dissonance, tone, and volume dynamics.

Thomas Wilfred (1889-1968) was one of America's first artists to compose exclusively in light and color. Wilfred began his experiments in 1905 and worked with this art form for the next sixty years.

Wilfred was concerned primarily with the visual and theoretical importance of light and color. The basis of this type of art in motion, or kinetic art, is the utilization of time in a distinctly musical way. For Wilfred and his successors, the historical distinction between the spatial arts-architecture, painting and sculpture-and the temporal arts-music, poetry and drama-had finally been completely obliterated in various forms of color-music.

Color-music has been used by psychologists as a type of moving Rorshach test. Color-music was also been used with post-WWII veterans suffering from depression and post-traumatic shock. These color-music films, known as Aurotone films, consisted of changing abstract forms in pastel colors set to organ music and the singing of Bing Crosby. Many patients viewing the color-music films were so moved emotionally that they became more accessible for traditional group and individual therapeutic methods.

Other applications for color-music and multimedia art have included the use of films similar to the Aurotone films for the reduction of pain in a maternity ward in a London hospital. In addition, combinations of nature films and music are gaining widespread acceptance in hospitals as a soothing alternative to traditional TV programming for patients.
